The design
After the lotus and the gecko, we have chosen the Kulukulu to honour the island of Niue. This colourful bird is represented on the reverse of our coin, along with its face value of 1 New Zealand Dollar, thus attesting to its legal tender status.
This coin is one of the last coins in the world to be minted with the portrait of Elizabeth II.
This creation is also a charming nod to the Pacific islands to which the island of Niue belongs. Located in the heart of the Pacific between Tonga, Samoa and Cook, the island is part of the Commonwealth, of which the queen is the head.
